Welcome to Chester Station
A historic gateway connecting Cheshire to the wider UK rail network
Chester Station, located in the Newtown area of the city, is one of the North West’s most significant railway hubs. Designed by Francis Thompson and opened in 1848, the station has stood the test of time — even earning Grade II* listed status for its architectural and historical value. Originally known as Chester General, it once served alongside the now-closed Chester Northgate, and remains a proud part of the city’s transport heritage.
Today, Chester Station is a major interchange for local and long-distance journeys, with regular services to key destinations including London, Cardiff, Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, and beyond. Following a major refurbishment in 2007, passengers benefit from improved facilities, better access, and a welcoming environment throughout. Staff are available daily to offer assistance before and after scheduled services.
