Railway History & Heritage Researcher (Volunteer)

Volunteer opportunity with North Cheshire Community Rail Partnership

What will the role involve?

As a Railway History & Heritage Researcher, you will help uncover, record and share the stories that show how our railways have shaped everyday life across North Cheshire, Halton and Warrington.

This role focuses on researching and bringing to life the social, economic and cultural impact of local railways, past and present. That might include stories of people who worked on the railways, travelled by train, or relied on rail for trade and industry, as well as how railways have influenced the growth of towns, villages and communities.

An initial area of interest is the 1960s, a period of major change for both the railways and wider society, although this can expand over time depending on your interests.

Your research will help support:

  • community pride in local railways
  • learning and education
  • heritage and place identity
  • evidence of the wider social value that community rail delivers

Who would this role suit?

This role would suit someone who:

  • has an interest in railways, local history, heritage or social history
  • enjoys researching, reading, collecting stories or speaking with people
  • likes the idea of contributing to learning, understanding and shared memory
  • values inclusive, community-led projects

You do not need to be a professional historian. Curiosity, care and enthusiasm matter more than formal qualifications.

Support with publishing and sharing

You won’t need advanced computer or website skills for this role.

Our web builder will support you by:

  • turning your research into website articles and content
  • helping prepare stories, images or documents for publication
  • advising on how best to share material with wider audiences

Basic email use is helpful, as you’ll occasionally be asked to send notes, documents or images so they can be prepared and published online.

Location and time commitment

  • This role can be carried out remotely from anywhere, although an interest in or connection to the local area is welcomed.
  • Time commitment is flexible and can be as little or as much as suits you.

Why this role matters

By helping to record and share our railway stories, you’ll be contributing to:

  • stronger community identity and pride
  • accessible learning and heritage
  • a clearer understanding of the value railways bring to people’s lives
  • the long-term evidence that supports investment in community rail

Your work will help ensure that the stories behind our railways are not lost, but shared and valued by current and future generations.
