North Cheshire Community Rail Partnership welcomes the introduction of a new Transport for Wales timetable from 17 May 2026, which brings meaningful improvements to rail connectivity across our region.
These changes represent a significant step forward. Not only do they enhance access to destinations across North Wales and beyond, but they also strengthen the role of rail in supporting sustainable travel, local economies and connected communities.
As a partnership, we work closely with rail industry stakeholders. Therefore, this investment reflects the shared ambition to deliver a railway that better serves both people and places across North Cheshire.
Stronger Links from Our Local Stations
Stations within our partnership area, including Chester, Helsby, Frodsham, Runcorn, Runcorn East and Warrington Bank Quay, will benefit from improved connectivity and clearer journey options.
In particular, the updated timetable introduces a more consistent hourly service pattern. As a result, passengers can plan journeys with greater confidence, while also accessing a wider range of destinations with improved interchange opportunities.
Importantly, new and extended services will strengthen links between:
- North Cheshire and North Wales
- Key employment and education centres
- Regional transport hubs including Chester
This supports our wider aim of ensuring that railways remain central to everyday life, whether for commuting, leisure or community access.
Supporting Sustainable and Accessible Travel
These timetable improvements directly support our strategic focus on Affordable Access and Promotion. By increasing service frequency and simplifying journey planning, rail becomes a more attractive and practical choice.
At the same time, improved connectivity encourages more people to consider sustainable travel options. This is particularly important as communities look to reduce reliance on cars and improve environmental outcomes.
Furthermore, clearer service patterns and better integration with other transport networks help ensure that rail is accessible to a wider range of users.
Strengthening Community and Place
Better rail services do more than move people. They help shape stronger, more connected communities.
Through our Stations in Their Place theme, we see stations as gateways to local identity. Therefore, increased services create more opportunities to promote towns and villages across North Cheshire, encouraging visits, supporting local businesses and strengthening community pride.
In addition, improved connectivity helps reduce isolation by making it easier for people to access services, opportunities and social networks.
Enabling Wellbeing, Inclusion and Opportunity
Access to reliable and frequent rail services plays an important role in supporting wellbeing and inclusion.
Through our Health, Well-being and Inclusion theme, we recognise that transport is a key enabler. As services improve, more people can access employment, education and community activities, while also benefiting from reduced travel stress and increased independence.
At the same time, these changes create new opportunities for community engagement, including volunteering and outreach at stations.
Creating Opportunities for Learning and Engagement
Improved rail connectivity also supports our Research, Education and Heritage theme.
Stronger links between regions make it easier to collaborate with partners such as the University of Chester and other organisations. As a result, we can continue to develop projects that explore the social, economic and historical impact of the railway.
Moreover, better services provide new opportunities to engage schools, colleges and community groups with the railway as part of their learning and development.
Working in Partnership for Long-Term Impact
North Cheshire Community Rail Partnership exists to bring together communities, partners and the rail industry to maximise the benefits of our railway network.
This timetable change reflects the importance of strong collaboration. By working with partners such as Transport for Wales, we can continue to promote rail use, support station improvements and develop community-led initiatives, as set out in our Core Management Plan.
In addition, our strategy highlights the vital role community rail plays in connecting people, supporting inclusion and enabling sustainable economic development.
A Positive Step Forward for Our Railways
Chris Kimberley, Director of North Cheshire Community Rail Partnership, said:
“It’s great news for North Cheshire with an improved range of places served directly by trains from Runcorn, Frodsham and Helsby. We look forward to continuing to develop our partnership with Transport for Wales to help promote these services and enhance the environment of local stations through the commitment of new station volunteer groups.”
Looking Ahead
As these timetable changes take effect, we encourage passengers to check journeys in advance and explore the new opportunities available.
Meanwhile, we will continue working with partners and communities to ensure that these improvements deliver lasting benefits.
Because ultimately, everything we do is guided by our vision:
Everyone Proud of Our Railways.
