Helsby Station site visit explores future community opportunities

Bringing partners and volunteers together to shape the future of Helsby Station

A recent site visit at Helsby Station brought together partners from the rail industry and local volunteers to explore how the station can better serve its community.

Colleagues from Network Rail and Transport for Wales joined North Cheshire Community Rail Partnership and the Friends of Helsby Station volunteers. Together, they reviewed current progress and discussed future opportunities for the station and its surroundings.

Encouragingly, volunteers have already made a strong start. The station gardens are beginning to take shape, and as a result, the space feels more welcoming and better cared for. These improvements not only enhance the passenger experience, but they also help build local pride.

At the same time, attention is turning to what comes next. In particular, the group explored how the currently unused Grade II listed buildings could be brought back into use. This creates an opportunity to develop community spaces that reflect local identity and meet local needs.

This work supports our Stations in Their Place theme, which focuses on creating stations that feel safe, vibrant and connected to their communities. In addition, it highlights the value of strong partnerships. By working together, we can develop ideas that deliver lasting social and environmental benefits.

Volunteers remain central to this progress. They are helping to improve the station environment, while also shaping future plans. Therefore, volunteering continues to play a key role in delivering community rail projects and building long-term impact.

Looking ahead, we will continue to work with partners to develop proposals over the coming months. Through collaboration and shared ambition, Helsby Station can become more than a place to travel through. Instead, it can become a space that communities actively use and feel proud of.
