About Friends of Ellesmere Port Station
Friends of Ellesmere Port Station brings local people together to support the station, share ideas and help strengthen its connection with the wider Ellesmere Port community.
Supported by North Cheshire Community Rail Partnership, the volunteer-led group provides opportunities for residents, community organisations and rail partners to work together on projects that can make a positive difference.
That could mean helping to create a greener and more welcoming station environment. However, it can also mean celebrating local heritage, supporting community activities, promoting sustainable travel or helping visitors discover more of Ellesmere Port when they arrive by train.
The group is part of the wider community rail movement, where local people play an active role in connecting railways with the communities they serve.

Friends of Ellesmere Port Station is one way local people can help make that vision a reality.
A Station Connected to Its Community
Ellesmere Port Station provides important connections for people travelling for work, education, leisure and everyday life. At the same time, it is a gateway for visitors arriving in the town.
Therefore, our ambition is not simply to look at the station in isolation. We want to strengthen the relationship between the railway and the place around it.
Friends of Ellesmere Port Station gives local people an opportunity to contribute to that ambition. Through volunteering, community engagement and partnership working, the group can help identify opportunities that reflect local priorities and make the station feel increasingly connected to Ellesmere Port.
As the group develops, volunteers will be encouraged to contribute their own ideas and interests. In turn, this will help ensure that future activities are shaped with the community rather than simply for it.
Putting the Station in Its Place
Stations in Their Place is one of North Cheshire Community Rail Partnership’s four strategic themes.
It focuses on stations becoming welcoming, safe and vibrant places, while also creating clearer connections between railways and the towns and communities around them.
For Ellesmere Port, this creates opportunities to think beyond the platforms and consider the complete journey.

Ways to Get Involved
There is no single way to be a Friend of Ellesmere Port Station.
Different projects require different interests and skills. Therefore, opportunities can develop around what volunteers enjoy doing, the time they have available and the ideas they would like to explore.
Activities could include:

- Biodiversity and wildlife projects

Friends of Ellesmere Port Station can help us explore these connections from a local perspective.
For example, volunteers could contribute ideas about visitor information, walking connections, local destinations or ways to make onward journeys clearer. Community knowledge can also help identify opportunities that may not always be obvious to organisations working outside the area.
Consequently, the Friends group can provide an important local voice as we work with partners to make the railway a better-connected part of Ellesmere Port.
Where Railways and Waterways Meet
Ellesmere Port has a distinctive story shaped by transport, industry, railways and waterways.
The National Waterways Museum Ellesmere Port provides an important connection with this history, celebrating Britain’s canals, waterways and the people and industries associated with them.
For community rail, this creates an exciting opportunity.
By strengthening connections between the railway, waterways and local visitor attractions, we can encourage more people to consider arriving by train and exploring the area sustainably. At the same time, better connections can help visitors discover more of Ellesmere Port and its distinctive heritage.
Friends of Ellesmere Port Station could contribute by supporting heritage projects, helping develop visitor information, promoting walking and onward connections or researching stories about the railway and the communities and industries it has served.
There is also potential to work collaboratively with local heritage, community and waterways organisations, bringing different stories together and helping more people discover them.
This work supports our Research, Education and Heritage theme, which aims to preserve railway stories, encourage learning and better understand the social and economic contribution of our railways.
Encouraging Sustainable Journeys
Rail travel can play an important part in creating more sustainable journeys. However, the train is often only one part of getting from one place to another.
Walking, cycling, buses and other public transport connections all matter. So does clear information about how to reach local attractions and destinations once passengers leave the station.
Friends of Ellesmere Port Station can help us look at these journeys through the eyes of local people and visitors.
In addition, the group can support activities that raise awareness of rail travel and encourage people to consider more sustainable ways of exploring Ellesmere Port and the surrounding area.
This contributes to another of our strategic themes, Affordable Access and Promotion, which aims to increase awareness of rail travel opportunities, improve accessibility and work with attractions to encourage sustainable visits.
Volunteering and Community Wellbeing
Becoming involved with Friends of Ellesmere Port Station is not only about improving the railway environment.
Volunteering can bring people together, create new social connections and provide opportunities to share existing skills or develop new ones. Furthermore, taking part in a local project can provide a rewarding way to contribute to your community.
This connects directly with our Health, Well-being and Inclusion theme.
We want Friends of Ellesmere Port Station to be welcoming and inclusive, with opportunities for people from different backgrounds, ages and levels of experience.
Some volunteers may want to become regularly involved, while others might prefer to support an occasional activity or particular project.
Both are valuable.
