North Cheshire Community Rail Partnership is pleased to once again support Frodsham’s popular Festival of Walks, taking place from 24 April to 4 May 2026.
This much-loved community festival offers a wide range of guided walks suitable for all ages and abilities. In addition, many of the free-to-attend walks begin and end close to railway stations, which makes it easy for participants to travel sustainably by train.
By combining active travel, heritage and community engagement, the festival highlights the wider benefits that local railways bring to our towns and villages.
Walks Connected by Rail
Several walks start close to stations, including Frodsham, Helsby, Runcorn, Warrington Bank Quay, Delamere on the Mid Cheshire Line and Chester.
As a result, walkers can relax and enjoy the day without worrying about car parking. At the same time, travelling by train supports greener travel choices and reduces congestion in local areas.
Railway Themed Walk – Wednesday 29 April
A highlight of this year’s programme is the themed walk, “How railways opened up the North Cheshire hills”.
The walk begins at Frodsham station and covers 5.5 miles in a circular route. Along the way, participants will explore how the arrival of the railway shaped tourism and community life in north Cheshire.
Frodsham & District History Society supports the walk, and local historian Sue Lorimer will explain how Helsby gained its passenger station. After travelling by train to Helsby, the group will walk back across the hills to Frodsham.
Therefore, the event offers a unique opportunity to experience both the landscape and the railway history that helped open it up to visitors.
