The station is located within the Stanlow Refinery in Cheshire, situated on the Ellesmere Port to Warrington Line with services operated by Northern.

Station information

The station opened in 1940 with the purpose of serving the Shell Thornton Aero Engine Laboratory (AEL), responsible for developing fuels and oils for the aircraft of the Royal Air Force. The station is surrounded by the Stanlow refinery site, one of the largest refineries in Europe covering an area equivalent of 300 football pitches. This means that many of the station users are refinery employees.
The station has one of the lowest passenger numbers in Cheshire.
Three trains per day call at the station in each direction (towards Helsby and Ellesmere Port).

Visiting Stanlow & Thornton

The station, located on Oil Sites Road, a private road – is now closed to motor vehicles except for site access. The limited access to this station means that there are no bus or taxi services from this station.
