Travel by Train to The Danny Cruises from Ellesmere Port

Rail travel and waterways heritage in Ellesmere Port

Visitors are being encouraged to travel by train to enjoy two special cruises aboard the historic The Daniel Adamson on Bank Holiday Monday 25th May, departing from National Waterways Museum Ellesmere Port.

With regular half-hourly services operated by Merseyrail, travelling by rail offers a simple and sustainable way to reach Ellesmere Port. As a result, visitors can enjoy a day exploring local heritage, waterways and attractions.

Ellesmere Port station is located around a 15 minute walk from the museum. Therefore, it provides a convenient link between rail and water for visitors arriving from Liverpool, Birkenhead and across the Wirral.

Morning Cruise

10:00 to 11:00 | Eastham Locks and Manchester Ship Canal

This one-hour return cruise offers a fascinating introduction to the industrial heritage of the Manchester Ship Canal. Departing from the National Waterways Museum Ellesmere Port, passengers travel towards Eastham Locks, passing historic berths and landmarks including Mount Manisty, before returning to the same berth at Telford Quay.

As the cruise begins and ends in Ellesmere Port, it is easy to plan a simple out-and-back day trip by train using Merseyrail services, with time to explore the museum before or after your journey.

Afternoon Cruise

13:00 to 17:00 | Sutton Weaver Swing Bridge and River Weaver

For those looking for a longer experience, this four-hour cruise explores both industrial heritage and quieter rural stretches of the waterways. The route passes Weston Docks, the Runcorn Railway Bridge and the Silver Jubilee Bridge, before turning at Old Quay and continuing to Sutton Weaver.

At the end of the cruise, coach transport returns passengers to National Waterways Museum Ellesmere Port, making it easy to plan a circular day out. Visitors can arrive and depart by train using regular Merseyrail services, creating a simple and well-connected journey.

A Connected Visitor Experience

North Cheshire Community Rail Partnership and The Danny, bringing together rail and waterway heritage to create joined-up visitor experiences.

By promoting rail travel to Ellesmere Port, the partnership aims to:

  • encourage sustainable travel choices
  • increase visitor numbers to local attractions
  • strengthen links between stations and communities
  • support future tourism growth across the area

This is an early step in a wider programme that will continue with Discovery Days in July, helping to showcase Ellesmere Port as a destination that is easy to reach by train and rich in heritage.
